The Furniture Manufacturing Regions in China
 
The Chinese furniture manufacturing industry is mainly distributed into four geographical regions from south to north along the east coastline, with the south by far the busiest region Together, the four furniture manufacturing regions contribute up to 90 percent of the industry’s total shipments and more than 80 percent of export shipments (Source: CNFA).

Furniture Manufacturing in the Pearl River Delta Region of South of China
(Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou and Shunde) This region originally attracted a high volume of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s furniture enterprises and developed into China’s largest furniture manufacturing and export base. Guangdong took full advantage of China’s Opening and Reform policy and favorable geological position for international trading. As one of the first places to introduce market economy in mainland China two decades ago, it has benefited much from the government’s supporting subsidies and attracted foreign funds, which greatly boosted the growth of furniture manufacturing industries, with about half of the production for export purposes. Altogether, it accounts for a third of the country’s total furniture production output value and half of China’s total export. Guangdong usually ranks the province with the highest furniture exports. It Boasts 6,000 Chinese furniture manufacturers, and claims more than 35 percent of the furniture industry’s total shipments and 50 percent of total export shipments each year.

Furthermore, Guangdong’s Pearl River delta is in close proximity to some of the world’s largest container ports of Hong Kong, and Shenzhen. The heavy concentrations of furniture manufacturing and supplying industries, has become the industry’s most important production and export region.

It should be noted that the neighboring Fujian Province is also extremely prosperous as it accounts for almost a quarter of the country’s total furniture shipments and 8 percent of total exports in terms of value of shipments.

Furniture Manufacturing in Zhejiang Province
Zhejiang Province borders the largest Chinese furniture manufacturing market: Shanghai. Zhejiang, harbors more than 2500 Chinese furniture manufacturers, making it an incredibly important furniture manufacturing zone. This area is acclaimed as China’s second largest furniture manufacturing base; a cluster well known for greater product quality and is very well versed in commerce. More than 1000 Chinese furniture manufacturing facilities can be found in Wenzhou alone, outputting more the 600 Million Dollars of furniture production annually.

It is therefore the center for Chinese furniture manufacturing and distribution in East China, with more than contributing 16 percent of the industry’s total value of shipments and 10 percent of export sales. The region boasts a centuries-long furniture making history with spontaneously developed industrial concentrations of family workshops.

More and more foreign furniture industry players from the United States, Germany, Italy and Japan have moved towards China and will are choosing to base themselves in the areas of Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang.

Furniture Manufacturing in the North China Region
The North China Furniture Manufacturing Region (Beijing, Tianjin and Shandong)
Characterized by typically larger enterprises, this region forms a very significant furniture manufacturing base. Its proximity to the capital gives it an advantage of added market capacity. The metropolitan Beijing-Tianjin area, and Hebei Province in North China, represents approximately 10% of the industry’s total value of shipments and 10% of total export values.

The Northeast China Furniture Manufacturing Region
(Shenyang and Dalian) Northeast China is defined by the government of the People's Republic of China to include the three northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning and, thus, the region is sometimes called the Three Northeast Provinces. Accounting for approximately 4% and 4.54% of China’s total furniture production output and export value, respectively, the northeastern furniture industry has easy access to China’s major wood source of Greater and Lesser Xing-an Mountains, and the Siberian forest zone in Russia. Therefore northeastern furniture manufacturers have the advantage in producing solid wood furniture using local species, such as Chinese elm, ash, oak and white pine.
